Balance is very important. It is possible to lose ones self to that which is not material...to another realm...to see beyond the veil - to grasp that of the infinite...yet to remain grouded and in touch with the material world is embracing the balance I speak of.
"Be in this world but not of it"... perhaps this is the key.

The successful Shaman must maintain a balance of both realms, according to what I've read. I've also read of madness...losing oneself to the responsibility of it all. A permanent bad trip if you may. I can relate to that. A sense of sure footedness is essential for balance, like a high wire act! ;D Like you said to be grounded is essential. One friend of mine...Steve is his name ...said to me once. "We must keep our point of reference and remember that while journeying." Point of reference...beautiful language. To ground oneself, it's a personal decision that only one can derive meaning. It's personal like a seed...a unique seed.

It's personal like a seed...a unique seed. Yes - I think what you've said here describes the Shamanic path beautifully. It is a very individual thing...as anything pertaining to the spiritual is. The "many dwelling places", the "many paths" leading to the same place, the "many petals on the lotus"...they all speak of this. To me the whole concept of this topic is open to personal interpretation...just as the "Shaman as artist" thread touched on. For anyone to attempt to place the definition of Shamanism into a neat box is missing the point. It must be a personal journey. Why else do many cultures send an initiate off on their own to attain self discovery? We are, each of us, unique pieces of the puzzle/mirror which form the "whole"...and each reflects that "whole" back in their own unique way. If we could put the many pieces together- are we not then forming a picture of that which we seek to find? Each individual soul is a tiny prism shining from, and back to, a great eternal light...and although connected, no one prism of light is exactly the same. We have much to learn from that which lies beyond us...and yet, we must not forget to "see" that which has been right there all along.
