We are adopting! Our 10 year old son will be getting this for Christmas. Her name is Cricket, and she is a Catahoula Leopard Dog, the State Dog of Louisiana.

Sorry it's so big. G, can you make it smaller?

IF you think the picture is big, just wait till she fills up on puppy chow! The woman that works with us rescued a male Catahoula up here in Dayton, Ohio from a local shelter. They saw him in a cage just like many other wonderful candidates but he made eye contact with her and her husband in a way that said, "You need to check me out!" They took him to the "interview room" where he sniffed their daughter first, the wife second and finally, satisfied with who the top dog of the pack really was, went up to the husband and laid his head on his lap. The rest is history, as they say. Funny thing is, no one at the rescue center knew exactly what he was, only that he was found wandering out in the country side with no tags, etc. After he was brought home, the wife spent hours on the internet until she came across a site dedicated to Catahoulas. When she took him to the Vet the next time (incidentally, he wasn't sure himself what he was) she showed him some pictures she had printed off and the Vet declared, "You're right, that's the first one I've seen in person!" The dog has been a great member of the family both indoors and out. I'm sure your little girl will be the same. Merry Christmas to you and your family. noolmusic.com/yahoo_videos/the_bellamy_brothers_-_catahoula.php

Thanks, G!
George, my reading of Catahoulas indicates the same. They are shepherds by instinct, and protective of those they know. Apparently, very intelligent work dogs. This one will be small, she is a mix, probably 20" tall and 40-50 pounds. My 21 year old is keeping her for 2 days, then it's off to a friend of mine's farm where she will be babysat for 2 weeks by a semi-retired couple who have 3 other Catahoulas and a couple hundred acres. I will get her back Christmas Eve for Davis.
When I got her to Chris' apartment last night, she was eating the Puppy Chow and ended up looking pregnant. We were excited because dogs we have got in the past took two or three days to get comfortable enough to eat anything.

Very nice. She is kind of a mix between Catahoula Blue and Catahoula Red. Actually, I just found out that she is likely a pure-bred from my neighbors brother who breeds them. Not bad for a pound puppy!

I can't believe I missed this! Vaj...she's beautiful! And - full of mischief, I suspect?! Ahh...but the absolute loyalty and unconditional love gained makes it all worth while in the end...take it from a long time dog/animal lover...it surely is a beautiful thing. How is she doing? A bit bigger now I'd guess? Chris and I have talked about perhaps going to the SPCA and giving a dog a much needed loving home...we sure could do that! I took a long lunchbreak from work recently and visited the local Shelter...it brought tears to my eyes...so many abandoned animals...just wanting love...when the time is right our home will have a new member...(although I imagine "Alley Cat" might get her wee nose out of joint for a spell!!!) She'll get over it. In honor of Pepper's memory, we have to keep loving and giving...that's what she lived for...

She is quite a bit bigger. Stands almost 24" at the shoulder, 62 pounds, and right at 9 1/2 months old. Hopefully, she is about done growing. She jumped up into my truck today for the first time. Didn't know she could do it, it is about a four foot hop.

Apparently, she knew it. Didn't even hesitate.
She still thinks that she can't jump down, though.
