This is an exercise to bring your mind into the present. It is used in conjunction with candle gazing, a higher level exercise associated with Muga ichinen ho.
Basically, you sit in a meditative posture, go through the relaxation rituals of the other exercises, then strike the bell.
Listen only to the sound of the bell. As it trails off into nothingness, continue attempting to hear it. Even when it is gone, try and retain the singular focus of listening for the sound.
As soon as you become distracted, strike and repeat.
Because the sound is infinitely softening, it is impossible to hold onto what it is, or was even a second ago. In order to continue to hear it, you must be letting it go continuously.

Are there specific bells for this exercise? Something that resonates for a longer time perhaps? Would a specific pitch be desirable? I always wondered about gongs and why they're used in meditation circles.

Tuning forks...what an excellent idea. I'm going to purchase a set. I wonder if the mind will react differently with the different keys. I wonder if striking two keys would bring enhanced results? I'm going to search for my chord. A weakness of mine is that I am tone deaf...a karaoke embarrassment. Maybe this exercise will help me in a broad sense as well. Thanks for posting this. Are there any exercises that incorporate mantras?

Baby You're A Rich Man
How does it feel to be One of the beautiful people? Now that you know who you are What do you want to be? And have you traveled very far? Far as the eye can see.
How does it feel to be One of the beautiful people? How often have you been there? Often enough to know. What did you see, when you were there? Nothing that doesn't show.
Baby you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man too. You keep all your money in a big brown bag inside a zoo. What a thing to do.
Baby you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man too.
How does it feel to be One of the beautiful people? Tuned to a natural E Happy to be that way. Now that you've found another key What are you going to play?
Baby you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man, Baby you're a rich man too. You keep all your money in a big brown bag inside a zoo. What a thing to do. Baby you're a rich man...

Hmmm. Tuned to a natural E. Are there any songs you don't know, George?

According to the healing tuning fork site in the link above the key of E correlates to the blood and to the solar plexus.
Hmmm...I wonder why the solar plexus was named so? Our will is centered there according to Shamanic belief. I guess the will could be responsible for giving forth light in a way. Make sense?

This is really interesting...the connection of certain sounds/tones...I am going to explore this a bit more myself. Hey G, I can relate to being tone deaf. I have such a desire to SING...but, believe me, it just ain't a good idea.

The solar plexus was so named because it is the "central" plexus of the nervous system, much like our sun is the center of our solar system.
