WASN'T THAT A TIME
Hays/Seeger/Gilbert/Brooks- Sanga Music, Inc. BMI [Last verse added by Virginia Coigney]
Our fathers bled at Valley Forge, the snow was red with blood Their faith was worn at Valley Forge, Their faith was brotherhood.
Wasn't that a time, wasn't that a time? A time to try the soul of men, Wasn't that a terrible time?
Brave men who fought at Gettysburg now lie in soldier's graves But there they stemmed the rebel tide And there their faith was saved
Wasn't that a time, wasn't that a time? A time to try the soul of men, wasn't that a terrible time?
The wars are long, the peace is frail, the madmen come again. There is no freedom in a land where fear and hate prevail.
Isn't this a time, isn't this a time? A time to try the soul of men, Isn't this a terrible time?
Our fathers bled at Valley Forge, the snow was red with blood Their faith was worn at Valley Forge, Their faith was brotherhood.
Wasn't that a time, wasn't that a time? A time to try the soul of men, Wasn't that a terrible time?

fear and hate are such tawdry words
As one who firmly believes that we need a significant shift in our political paradigm I thought that these lyrics are especially appropriate for our current time. The politics of fear and hate have prevailed, not just from 9/11 but even before.
Give me the "Peace and Love" the '60s promised but were driven underground by the assassins' bullets, gross materialism, mindless pop culture and divisive political pandering, corruption and misdirection.
I do not contend that peace, love and brotherhood are not at the heart of the American people, just that they have allowed fear and hate to stifle their better instincts.

Well, for a start too much emphasis is placed on politics, and fear and hate are constantly being drawn into daily living by much of the doctrine those politicians whether it be directly or by inference.
If the political agendas of these politicians and similar individuals were to be totally ignored and replaced with the 60's mindsets of love and peace by as many people as possible then there may be a total reversal of trends.
IMO the more attention and news space politicians etc. get, and the more that is published and spent on them, the more powerful they become and so does their doctrine.
Anyway that is really only my personal belief and in a small way I am trying to make that so in my personal existence. If more people started to withdraw from the humdrum and replace that with a more wholesome attitude, I truly think that a whole lot of global issues could end and social problems would be reversed or halted.
